When parents hear 'Reggio-inspired' on our tour, some of them nod knowingly and some look at me with polite blankness. Both reactions are fine — the name is less important than what it actually looks like for your child. Let me explain it plainly.

Reggio Emilia is a city in northern Italy where, after World War II, families rebuilt their community by prioritizing children's education. The approach that emerged treats children as capable, curious researchers — not as recipients of information. In practice, this means that our classroom topics are not pre-decided for the whole year. We pay attention to what children are naturally drawn to and build curriculum around their questions. Last spring, my class spent four weeks investigating 'how does a seed become a tomato' — because someone brought in a tomato from our garden and asked the question. We read books, grew seedlings, drew diagrams, measured growth, and documented everything in a class book.

The documentation piece is what makes Reggio distinct from 'just letting kids play.' Teachers observe, photograph, and record children's thinking. Parents can see their child's learning made visible through displayed work, class books, and (here at Sunflower) through the daily Brightwheel updates. This documentation also helps teachers identify what a child is ready to learn next — far more precisely than a standardized curriculum calendar can.

What the research shows: multiple longitudinal studies of Reggio-inspired programs show improved executive function, stronger vocabulary, higher engagement with reading, and better social problem-solving compared to direct-instruction preschools. These aren't soft outcomes. They're the skills kindergarten teachers actually say they want children to arrive with.
